Pet Vaccinations

APPOINTMENT

At Los Feliz Small Animal Hospital, we want your pet to live a long, disease-free life, just as much as you do. That’s why we recommend that they are vaccinated on a regular basis. Vaccines help strengthen your pet’s immune system, allowing it to be better prepared to fight off certain viruses and diseases. Pet vaccinations should be part of every dog’s and cat’s wellness plan as a means of preventive care.

We offer both core (vital) and non-core (optional) vaccines which can be customized for each pet, based on age, breed, and lifestyle/risk of exposure. These vaccines are based on the American Animal Hospital Association’s guidelines, which means they reflect the highest standards in veterinary medicine. To remain effective, vaccines should be updated every one to three years, which we can discuss further at your pet’s next wellness visit.

Core Vs. Non-Core Vaccines

The following are some of the core and non-core pet vaccines we offer here in our Los Angeles veterinary clinic:

Core Vaccines – Dogs

  • Rabies: This virus is 100% fatal and can affect dogs, cats, and other mammals. There is no treatment available for rabies.
  • Distemper: This severe disease, caused by an airborne virus, can affect both dogs and cats. It can be fatal if not treated.
  • Canine parvovirus: This contagious canine virus is usually fatal if left untreated. It can cause bloody diarrhea and vomiting.

Non-Core Vaccines

  • Bordetella: The bordetella vaccine can help protect your pet from Kennel Cough, a contagious upper respiratory condition. This upper respiratory condition is highly contagious and can be found at dog parks, boarding facilities, and grooming salons.
  • Lyme: Lyme is a tick-borne disease that affects dogs and other mammals. Therefore, this vaccine is usually recommended only for dogs that may be exposed to ticks. If you take your pet on hikes, camping or if traveling to woodsy areas, you may want to consider a Lyme Vaccine for your dog.
  • Rattlesnake Vaccine: This vaccine generates protective antibodies against the rattlesnake venom, which neutralizes the venom itself. If you hike with your pet, this is recommended.
  • Canine Influenza Vaccine: This vaccine protects against both strains of the disease. Similar to Kennel Cough, Canine Influenza is transmitted from dog to dog by respiratory secretions (i.e. coughing, sneezing, and barking) and is highly contagious. We recommend that any pet receiving the Bordetella Vaccine should also receive Canine Influenza Vaccine.

Core Vaccines – Cats

  • FVRCP Vaccine: This vaccine provides protection against common strains of feline herpesvirus, calicivirus, and panleukopenia virus.

Non-Core Vaccines – Cats

  • Rabies: This virus is 100% fatal and can affect dogs, cats, and other mammals. There is no treatment available for rabies.
  • PUREVAX Feline Rabies: PUREVAX Feline Rabies 3 YR is recommended for the vaccination of healthy cats 12 weeks and older for prevention of disease due to the rabies virus. A 1-year booster vaccination is required after primary vaccination, followed by a vaccination every three years.
  • Feline leukemia virus: This vaccine can protect your pet from the disease, which is not curable once it has been contracted.
